Producer's Livestock Auction
( 325-653-3371; www.producersandcargile.com ; 1131 N Bell St; 9am Tue & Thu) No one has a
baaad time at the largest sheep auction in the USA, the Producer's Livestock Auction.
Sheep are sold on Tuesday and cattle on Thursday. The auctioneers' banter is the most
fascinating aspect of the whole deal - it's totally incomprehensible.
SPECTACLE
El Paseo de Santa Angela
The El Paseo is a family-friendly, pleasure-filled stroll that is part of the 4-mile-long river
walk that follows the Concho, from just west of downtown heading east to Bell St. Celeb-
ration Bridge links San Angelo's main street, Concho Ave, to the main attractions south of
the river, which include a collection of historic buildings along Orient St.
Santa Angela was San Angelo's original name, and the El Paseo de Santa Angela marks
the route that soldiers stationed at Fort Concho once used to visit the wanton town in its
heyday. In 1870 the post surgeon at the fort wrote that 'the village across the Concho…is
attaining an unenviable distinction from the numerous murders committed there… Over
100 murders have taken place in the radius of 10 miles.' And then there were the 35 bor-
dellos and saloons that lined Santa Angela's sidewalks.
