No matter how many forts you've seen in your Texas travels, this one is likely to be a
highlight. Many folks claim it's the best-preserved Western frontier fort in the US, and
much of it has been restored by the city over the decades.
Designed to protect settlers and people moving west on the overland trails, the fort went
up in 1867 on the fringes of the Texas frontier and saw service until 1889. Among its
highlights are the Headquarters Building, which includes the Fort Concho Museum, and
the Post Hospital.

miss the elegant and restored lobby of the 14-story 1929 Cactus Hotel (36 E Twohig Ave) .

house of pleasure from 1896 until the Texas Rangers shut it down in 1946. Rooms re-cre-
