POP 2500
Some 100 million years ago dinosaurs wandered this part of Texas, feasting on the lush
primeval vegetation (not knowing that someday they'd be part of the oil that would make
a not-yet-existing species rich - and dependent).
Evidence of these dinosaurs has survived in fossil form and today fuels a thriving tour-
ism industry. Least commercial is Dinosaur Valley State Park (
254-897-4588; www.tpwd.state.tx.us ;
8am-10pm) , where you can see actual tracks left by
1629 Park Rd 59, off FM 205; adult/child $7/free;
a Tyrannosaurus ex.
Elsewhere the ancient visitors are more hyped. Dinosaur World ( 254-898-1526;
www.dinosaurworld.com ; FM 205 at Park Rd 59; adult/child $13/10; 9am-5pm) has huge statues of dino-
saurs set on 22 acres. In comparison to the animated dinosaurs in films such as Jurassic
Park , those here seem all the more, well, static. Over at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center (
254-897-2960; www.fossilrim.org ; off US 67; admission $15-24; 8:30am-5:30pm daily, Mar-Sep) , you can
drive a nearly 10-mile course through an open-air zoo that's home to 52 animal species,
including cheetahs and giraffes.
Meanwhile, for an alternative view on all this evolution stuff, the Creation Evidence Museum
( www.creationevidence.org ; 3102 FM 205; adult/child $5/free; 10am-4pm Thu-Sat) aims to dispel evolu-
tionary theories and promote the many unique theories of its founder.
Glen Rose is 76 miles southwest of Dallas.
