Waxahachie

With sensational Victorian, Greek Revival and Queen Anne architecture lining its main
square, Waxahachie is easily one of the most beautiful small towns in Texas. That it has a
real vibrancy only adds to its appeal. And it's just 30 miles south of Dallas.
Sights
You can easily spend a half day or more touring Waxahachie. Be sure to pick up the walk-
ing- and driving-tour maps and brochures at the Ellis County Museum. On foot you can ex-
plore the beautiful downtown in a just a couple hours, while by car you can appreciate
some of the area's mansions.
Ellis County Courthouse
(Courthouse Square; 9am-5pm Mon-Fri) This stunner of a courthouse uses every Romanesque
trick in the book to awe you. The pink granite and red limestone are magnificent and a re-
cent restoration has only added sheen to the splendor. On weekdays you can wander the
compact interior and look into the wood-trimmed courtroom.
HISTORIC BUILDING
Ellis County Museum
( 972-937-0681; 201 S College St; 10am-5pm Mon-Sat, 1-4pm Sun) Housed in the 1893
Masonic Lodge, this well-curated museum gives a good sense of the history of the area.
Don't miss the details on all the shenanigans behind the construction of the courthouse.
MUSEUM
Webb Gallery
( 972-938-8085; www.webbartgallery.com ; 209-211 W. Franklin St; 1-5pm Sat & Sun) Inside this ornate
brick building (1902) is an eclectic and intriguing gallery which showcases works by nu-
merous local artists. You'll need to hang onto your jaw when see the works of Venzil
Zastoupil in the window. Over many years the late artist used hundreds of thousands of
toothpicks to create all manner of large objects, from working Ferris wheels to airplanes.
