16 The south Texas coast is reknowned for its bird-watching, with hundreds of species
congregating along its marshy coastal plains. But its premier site is the Aransas National
Wildlife Refuge ( Click here ) . It is home to the only naturally migrating flock of whooping
cranes in the US. These 5ft-tall white birds with red crowns would be noteworthy anyway,
but what's incredible is that the population has risen to more than 250 from its lowest point
in 1941 when just 15 birds remained.
