Africa is the focus of this urban zoo, which is just 3 miles south of downtown. It has gor-
illa and chimpanzee habitats and an entire exhibit called Giants of the Savanna. Kids like
the Children's Zoo with its winsome, furry critters.

Katy Trail
( www.katytraildallas.org ) For see-and-be-seen running and cycling, hit the tree-lined Katy Trail
that runs 3.5 miles from the American Airlines center downtown almost all the way to
SMU, passing through interesting neighborhoods along the way. The old railway route is
tree-lined and at times feels like the country.

State Fair of Texas Fair

fall highlight for many a Texan. Come ride one of the tallest Ferris wheels in North Amer-
ica, eat corn dogs (it's claimed that this is where they were invented), and browse among
the prize-winning cows, sheep and quilts.

Deep Ellum Arts Festival

hemian, diverse and relaxed, head down to the live-music stages and eclectic arts booths.

Staying uptown is pricey, but you're closest to restaurants and nightlife. Otherwise you'll
find all manner of chains for all manner of budgets along the highways, especially US 75
and to the west and north of the center.
