TRANSPORTATION
Transportation in this part of Texas is almost entirely limited to two modes: cars and trucks. If you're flying in,
shop around for the best rental-car deal you can find and make sure the car comes with unlimited mileage - in or-
der to fully enjoy the wide open spaces, you'll be doing a fair bit of driving. You'll also soon realize that Texas is
in the midst of the greatest open-air sculpture construction in history. Enormous freeway overpasses and clover-
leafs that dwarf anything found in California are rising around major cities as part of an unprecedented highway-
building boom.
Note that on many back roads, which are often by far the most scenic, there is a paucity of gas stations. Even
some rural county seats have lost their last place to fill up. So when the tank gets below a half, fill up.

Planning Ahead
Sports are the big consideration if you're making advance plans to visit Dallas or Fort
Worth and the Plains. Dallas Cowboys games will be sold out so you'll have to find a
source for tickets. The same goes for the many college football and basketball tourna-
ments. Otherwise this is a pretty easy place to visit at the drop of a (cowboy) hat.
