. To say this place is windswept is an understatement.
Bird Island Basin, on the lagoon side of park's barrier-island home, is a mecca for wind-
surfers. While the first mile or so of beach south of the visitor center is usually busy, it
doesn't take long to walk away from the crowds. If you have a 4WD vehicle, 60 miles of
beach is open for you to explore.
