Comfort
POP 2363
Another 19th-century German settlement tucked into the hills, Comfort is perhaps the
most idyllic of the Hill Country bunch, with rough-hewn limestone homes from the late
1800s and a beautifully restored historic center in the area around High St and 8th or 9th
Sts.
Shopping for antiques is Comfort's number-one activity, but you'll also find a few good
restaurants, a winery and, as the town's name suggests, an easy way of life. Start at the
Comfort Antique Mall ( 830-995-4678; 734 High St; 10am-5pm Sun-Fri, to 6pm Sat) where you can
pick up a map of antique stores, or go to www.comfort-texas.com to discover all your op-
tions.
For some true historic charm, spend the night at Hotel Faust ( 830-995-3030;
www.hotelfaust.com ; 717 High St; d $110-160, 2-bedroom cottage $175-195; ) . The limestone building
dates from the late 1800s, but the rooms have all been gutted and beautifully restored. For
a special treat, stay in their Ingenhuett Log Cabin , built in the 1820s and moved to its present
location from Kentucky.
The nicest restaurant in town is 814: A Texas Bistro ( 830-995-4990; www.814atexasbistro.com ; 713
High St; dinner $23-30; 6-9pm Thu & Fri, 11:30am-2pm & 6-9pm Sat, 11:30am-2pm Sun) . Located in the
former Comfort post office and sporting a rustic decor, this place is pure Hill Country.
There's not a huge array of choices: dinner has three mains options that change weekly, so
the focus is on doing just a couple of things but doing them really well.
For something more casual, you can't beat Comfort Pizza ( 830-995-5959; 802 High St; whole
pizza $15-20; 11am-10pm Mon-Sun) . Creative ingredient combos make choosing your pizza
fun: the prosciutto, pineapple and serrano chile pizza, for example, is known as the Angry
Samoan. Enjoy a glass of wine or a prickly pear cactus drink on the colorful patio, filled
with big metal lawn chairs.
Comfort is about halfway between Kerrville and Boerne on TX 27, just 2 miles west of
I-10.
