WORTH A TRIP
YO RANCH
Texas is full of ranches, but not many of those ranches are full of exotic game. Established in 1880 by Kerrville
merchant Charles Schreiner, the YO Ranch ( 830-640-3222; www.yoranch.com ; 1736 YO Ranch Road,
Mountain Home) once encompassed 600,000 acres. It was Charles Schreiner III who started a wildlife conserva-
tion program in the 1960s, and these days you can find up to 55 species of exotic animals roaming the ranch,
from gazelles to wildebeests to the beautiful scimitar-horned oryx.
The best way to experience it is on a wildlife tour, where you'll be loaded on a bus and taken up close enough
to get some pretty great pictures. And not to spoil any surprises, but at the end you might just get to feed a giraffe
(bring wet wipes; they're slobbery). The regular two-hour tour ($35) is offered Thursday through Sunday and in-
cludes a chuck-wagon lunch. If that's just not enough time, you can go all out and book a five-hour photo safari
($250).
The ranch also offers horseback rides (per first hour $45, per each additional hour $35) and overnight visits.
There are also hunting tours (which do take place away from the above tours).
