URBAN PLANNING
Street names in Fredericksburg appear to be a mishmash of trees, Texas towns and former US presidents. But
they were actually named so their initials spell out secret codes. The streets crossing Main St to the east of Court-
house Sq are Adams, Llano, Lincoln, Washington, Elk, Lee, Columbus, Olive, Mesquite and Eagle. And the
streets to the west are Crockett, Orange, Milam, Edison, Bowie, Acorn, Cherry and Kay.
Sights
National Museum of the Pacific War

seum complex consists of three war-centric galleries: the Admiral Nimitz Museum , chronicling
the life and career of Fredericksburg's most famous son; the George Bush Gallery of the Pacific
War , a large, impressive building housing big planes, big boats and big artillery; and the
Pacific Combat Zone , a 3-acre site that's been transformed into a South Pacific battleground.
History buffs can learn about (or refresh their memories on) the battles and campaigns,
and kids will be awed by the enormous vehicles. Admission is free for WWII veterans.
MUSEUM
Pioneer Museum

summer) Find out what life was like for the town's early inhabitants as you wander the 3
acres of the Gillespie County Historical Pioneer Museum. If nothing else, this collection
of restored homes and businesses from the late 1800s will help you appreciate the modern
conveniences awaiting you at your guesthouse.
HISTORICAL BUILDINGS
Vereins Kirche
(100 W Main St; 10am-4:30pm Tue-Sat, plus Mon in summer) Your admission to the Pioneer Mu-
seum includes a visit to the city's Vereins Kirche, which was the original town church,
meeting hall and school. The tiny building contains archival photos and historical artifacts
that can be interesting for history buffs and, if you're lucky, you'll get a great docent who
will really bring the stories to life.
