San Marcos
Around central Texas, San Marcos is practically synonymous with outlet malls. But the
town is also home to Southwest Texas State University, as well as both natural and tourist
attractions.

Witliff Collections

2-6pm Sun) Screenwriter/photographer Bill Witliff founded this repository of literary
and photographic archives on the campus of Texas State University. Check out the excel-
lent (and free!) photography exhibits. The 6600 sq ft of gallery space is room enough for
several exhibitions, which always includes the Lonesome Dove Collection.
The Witliff Collections is located on the 7th floor of the Alkek Library. Look online for
directions on how to get there.
Aquarena Center

10am-5pm, later in summer) Famed for its glass-bottom boat tours, this enjoyable place is
home to family-oriented exhibitions on ecology, history and archaeology. It also includes
the ruins of a Spanish mission founded here on the Feast of San Marcos.
Boat tours last an hour and let visitors peep beneath the surface of the lake formed by the
town's namesake springs, which gush forth 1½ million gallons of artesian water every day.
San Marcos Lions Club Tube Rental

south of the Aquarena Center, the Lions Club rents tubes in City Park (next to the Texas
National Guard Armory) to tackle a usually docile stretch of the San Marcos River. The last
tube is rented at 5:30pm and the last shuttle pickup from Rio Vista Dam is at 6:45pm sharp.
