Jun-Aug) Stop by the well-stocked Convention & Visitors Bureau's visitor center, opposite
the Alamo, for maps and brochures; the website also has loads of information useful for
preplanning. The staff can answer any questions you have and can also sell you passes for
tours or for VIA buses and streetcars.
Getting There & Away
AIR
San Antonio International Airport (SAT; 210-207-3433; www.sanantonio.gov/sat ; 9800 Airport Blvd) San
Antonio International Airport is about 9 miles north of downtown, just north of the inter-
section of Loop 410 and US 281. It's served by taxis, public transportation and shuttles.
The airport offers frequent flights to destinations in Texas and the rest of the USA, and
there are also direct or connecting air services to Mexico. In Terminal A you'll find Aer-
oMexico, AirTran Airways, Alaska Airlines, Delta, Interjet, Southwest, US Airways and
VivaAerobus. Terminal B houses American and United Airlines.
Southwest Airlines ( 800-435-9792; www.southwestairlines.com ) Southwest Airlines is the best airline
for short-hop flights around Texas.
BUS
Greyhound ( 210-270-5824; www.greyhound.com ) and Kerrville Bus Co ( 877-462-6342;
www.iridekbc.com ) share a bus terminal (500 N St Mary's St) right downtown. Kerrville Bus Co has
direct services to the Hill Country.
CAR & MOTORCYCLE
Downtown San Antonio is bordered by I-35, I-10 and I-37, with concentric rings of high-
ways around the center. I-35 connects Austin and San Antonio, and I-10 connects San An-
tonio with Houston to the east and El Paso to the west.
To get to the Hill Country, you can take I-10 north to Fredericksburg and Kerrville, or
US 281, which is the northbound continuation of I-37, to Johnson City. All major rental-
car agencies have outlets at San Antonio International Airport, and some have outlets
downtown as well.
TRAIN
Squeezed between Sunset Station and the Alamodome, the Amtrak station ( www.amtrak.com ; 350
Hoefgen Ave) is served by Sunset Limited and Texas Eagle trains. It's a fully staffed Amtrak
station, with an enclosed waiting area and free short-term parking. VIA streetcars ($1.20)
