A location along the Riverwalk gives any restaurant instant atmosphere - especially when
there's a patio involved. That makes it prime real estate, which means you're not going to
find many bargains there.
Southtown has its share of hip eateries that are better value, and north of downtown
around Brackenridge Park there are tons of inexpensive dining options.
Naturally, some of the best cooking is Tex-Mex and Mexican-style. Both the San Anto-
nio Current and the San Antonio Express-News' 'Weekender' section regularly list their
top pick of restaurants and are worth checking out.
OCHO AT HOTEL HAVANA
You're never going to stumble across Ocho ( 210-222-2008; www.havanasanantonio.com ; 1015 Navarro St;
mains $10-20; 7am-10pm Sun-Thu, to midnight Fri & Sat) while roaming the Riverwalk or checking out the
King William district, but this hidden-away lounge next to Hotel Havana is worth seeking out.
A glassed-in conservatory that looks onto the northern stretch of the Riverwalk has been fitted out with chan-
deliers and velvet furnishings for a eclectic-chic decor that's become hotelier Liz Lambert's trademark. The
Cuban-inspired menu is not extensive, but it's excellent, serving everything from breakfast to late-night cocktails.
Besides, you came for the ambience, right?
If it's a nice evening, you can get there by strolling along the Riverwalk about 20 minutes north of the main
hub.

certainly earned its ambience: this German restaurant has been around since 1917 and
looks the part, down to the wooden booths and the elaborate pattern of the hexagonal floor
