2 A small chapel and a long barrack don't seem much to remember the Alamo ( Click
here ) by, but that doesn't deter 28 million San Antonio visitors from paying homage annu-
ally. Never mind the tacky tourist attractions nearby and the fact that the site is now
dwarfed by its big-city surrounds. A few hundred Texas freedom fighters battled and died
here during the 13-day siege of this fortified mission by Mexican forces, a fact that still
stirs the feisty independent spirit of locals and underdog-lovers alike.
