Riverwalk
MAP GOOGLE MAP
( www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com ) A slice of Europe in the heart of San Antonio, the Riverwalk is
an essential part of experiencing the city. This is no ordinary riverfront, but a charming
canal and pedestrian street that is the main artery at the heart of San Antonio's tourism ef-
forts. For the best view, hop on a Rio San Antonio river cruise ( Click here ) .
You can meander past landscaped hotel gardens and riverside cafes, and linger on the
stone footbridges that stretch over the water. During summer it gets mighty crowded, but
at peaceful times (and as you get away from downtown) it's a lovely place to stroll - espe-
cially during the holidays when it's bedecked with twinkling lights.
The Riverwalk used to be just a downtown thing, but a recent $259-million project ex-
panded the Riverwalk to include 14 miles of paths. You can now walk south to the King
William District, or north to the San Antonio Art Museum and even up to the Pearl Brew-
ery complex.

( 210-247-4000; www.buckhornmuseum.com ; 318 E Houston St; adult/3-11yr $19/15; 10am-5pm, to 8pm in
summer) Waaaay back in 1881, when the original Buckhorn Saloon opened up, the owner
promised patrons a free beer or whiskey shot for every pair of deer antlers they brought.
Although the location has changed a couple of times, you can still see the collection - and
the bar - at the Buckhorn Saloon & Museum
An overpriced beverage is enough to buy your admission to the Saloon, which has an
impressive number of mounted animals watching over you, including a giraffe, a bear and
all manner of horn-wielding mammals. If that doesn't quench your thirst for taxidermy,
pony up for a kitsch adventure that includes wildlife from all over the world, as well as
oddities like a two-headed cow and an eight-legged lamb.
