seum while you're at it. At time of writing the museum had just moved in and staff were
still working hard to fill all that space with items like a shiny, red, old-timey Bastrop
firetruck from 1904. But big plans were afoot, which will eventually include an admission
charge.
Fisherman's Park
(1200 Willow St at Farm St) The best reason to visit this park on the banks of the Color-
ado River is the splash pad, a children's play area with water features you can run though,
stand in or sit on. It not only keeps the little ones cool but fills them with glee as only get-
ting good and wet during a hot Texas summer can.
Care for a stroll? The lovely June Hill Pape Riverwalk connects this park and nearby Ferry
Park with a half-mile path.
PARK
SQUARE
The Crossing
(601 Chestnut St) , A smattering of shops and restaurants within an old-timey village outfitted
in country rustic, with a windmill, barrels full of flowers, and rusty old tractors and trucks
adding to the ambience. It's just a block from downtown Bastrop and set on the Colorado
River.
Bastrop State Park
( 512-321-2101; www.tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/bastrop ; adult/12yr & under $4/free) This beautiful state
park was hit hard by the 2011 wildfires, which affected 96% of its nearly 6000 acres of
forest. Fortunately, they were able to save the historic cabins built by the Civilian Conser-
vation Corp in the 1930s, and the hiking, swimming and golfing continues. The scenic
12-mile drive through the park on Park Road 1C will let you glimpse both the destruction
and the regrowth. It's 1 mile east of Bastrop on Hwy 21.
PARK
Bastrop River Co
( 512-988-1154; www.bastroprivercompany.com ; 601 Chestnut St; paddle trips year-round $40, tube rental May-Sep
$15; daily summer, by appointment winter) The Colorado looks mighty inviting. Grab a canoe,
kayak or tube and get out there. Floats last two to three hours (unless you're feeling ambi-
tious and take the eight-to nine-hour route) and shuttle service back to downtown is in-
cluded.
