In-Depth Information
(AFS; 512-322-0145; www.austinfilm.org ) Frequent classic and independent film screenings at
venues around town. Slacker director Richard Linklater was an early promoter and
Quentin Tarantino is now on the board of directors.
Spectator Sports
The whole town turns burnt orange during UT game weekends, especially during football
season, when the fiercely loyal Longhorn fans are downright fanatical. (They're not flip-
ping you off: it's probably just the two-fingered sign for 'Hook 'em Horns.') For tickets to
any university-sponsored sporting event, contact the UT ticket office ( Click here ) .
GAY & LESBIAN AUSTIN
With a thriving gay population - not to mention pretty mellow straight people - Austin is arguably the most gay-
friendly city in Texas. The Austin Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce ( www.aglcc.org ) sponsors the Pride
Parade in June, as well as smaller events throughout the year. The Austin Chronicle ( Click here ) runs a gay event
column among the weekly listings, and the glossy L Style/G Style ( www.lstylegstyle.com ) magazine has a dual
gal/guy focus.
Austin's gay and lesbian club scene is mainly in the Warehouse District, though there are outposts elsewhere.
Oilcan Harry's MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 512-320-8823; 211 W 4th St; 2pm-2am Mon-Fri, noon-2am Sat
& Sun) Oh, yes, there's dancing. And oh, yes, it's packed. (And how are you supposed to dance with all those
people in there?) As much as the girls wish it were a mixed crowd, this scene is all about the boys. Sweaty ones.
Rusty's MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 512-482-9002; www.rustysaustin.com ; 405 E 7th St; 4pm-2am Wed-Sat,
from 2pm Sun, to midnight Mon) A gay bar with a Texas twang. Rusty's hosts poker nights, karaoke nights, and,
yes, country-dancing nights. Check the website to see what's going on.
Shopping
Not many folks visit Austin just to shop. That said, music is a huge industry here and
you'll find heaps of it in Austin's record stores. Employees are usually fairly knowledge-
able and will likely be in a band themselves. The best stores let you listen to just about
anything before you buy, and will carry the bands you see around town.
Vintage is a lifestyle, and the city's best hunting grounds for retro fashions and furnish-
ings are South Austin and Guadalupe St near UT. (For more vintage-fashion options than
those listed below, check out www.vintagearoundtownguide.com .)
