( 512-858-4959; www.saltlickbbq.com ; 18300 FM 1826, Driftwood; mains $11-20; 11am-10pm; ) It's
worth the 20-mile drive out of town just to see the massive outdoor barbecue pits at this
parklike place off US 290. It's a bit of a tourist fave, but the crowd-filled experience still
gets our nod. BYOB. Hungry? Choose the family-style all-you-can-eat option (adult/child
$19.95/6.95).

MAP
( 512-451-5440; 6416 N Lamar Blvd; mains $8-15; 11am-10pm Mon-Sat, 10am-9:30pm Sun) Kenneth
Threadgill's original restaurant and hootenanny palace in North Austin is where Janis
Joplin once performed.
SOUTHERN $$
County Line
( 512-346-3664; 5204 FM 2222; mains $12-23; 11am-9pm Sun & Mon, lunch & dinner Tue-Sat) Unless
you have an enormous appetite, there's no need to splurge on the all-you-can-eat meals.
Most of the combos and platters of delicious ribs, brisket and sausage are - truly - all you
can eat. We love the lakeside location (enjoy a beer on the dock while you wait) and the
lake-lodge decor.

MEXICAN $$$
( 512-459-4121; 2330 W North Loop Blvd; mains $16-25; 5:30-9:30pm Mon-Thu, to 10:30pm Fri & Sat,
11am-2pm Sun) The gorgeous building is drenched in the atmosphere of old Mexico, with
folk-inspired art, and this place has been serving interior Mexican cooking for over 25
years. The Sunday brunch buffet is an impressive event but, at $39 per person, you'd bet-
ter come hungry to make it worthwhile. Note that the last seating is one hour before close.
