Short of jumping into Barton Springs, there's no better way to cool off than at

pings - pardon us,
crush'ns
they call 'em - that get pounded and blended in, violently but lovingly, by staff
wielding a metal scoop in each hand. Mexican vanilla bean with fresh strawberries, dark chocolate with Reese's
Peanut Butter Cups, or mango with jelly beans if that's what you're into. With 15 flavors (rotated from their 300
recipes) and dozens of toppings, ranging from cookies and candy, to fruit or nuts, the combinations aren't endless,
but they number too high to count. Look for other locations on Guadalupe St north of the Universtiy of Texas
campus, on South Congress near all the shops, or at the airport for a last-ditch fix.

Avoid the bland, student-oriented fare that crowds Guadalupe St (aka the Drag). There are
still plenty of cheap eats in the UT area.

Kerbey Lane is a longtime Austin favorite, fulfilling round-the-clock cravings for
anything from gingerbread pancakes to black-bean tacos to mahimahi. Try the addictive
Kerbey Queso while you wait. (It has vegan queso too!) There are several other locations
around town, but this location in a homey bungalow is the original and has the most char-
acter.
