12 Volcanically active NZ is known as the 'Shaky Isles', and seven decades before the
Christchurch earthquakes of 2010 and 2011, the country was impacted by a significant seis-
mic event. When a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the North Island's east coast in 1931,
many brick buildings in the cities of Napier and Hastings collapsed. Reconstruction har-
nessed the art deco and Spanish mission architectural fashions of the day, and now Napier
