Visual Arts & Music
Austria is a relatively small country, but it has a grandiose past and excellent con-
temporary offerings in the visual arts and music. The reason is simple: Habsburg
monarchs fostered and patronised the arts for much of the period from Rudolf I's
rise in 1273 until the early 20th century. Although Vienna is the uncontested centre of
the visual arts, many important works are housed in smaller museums and, notably,
in churches or public buildings - the latter is especially true for baroque painting.
