Architecture
Thanks to the Habsburg monarchy and its obsession with creating grand works, Aus-
tria is packed with high-calibre architecture. The earliest 'architectural' signs are an-
cient grave mounds from the Iron Age Hallstatt culture outside Grossklein, and the
marginally more recent Roman ruins of Vienna and Carnuntum. In later centuries
and millennia, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and especially baroque buildings
rose up all over Austria.
