In-Depth Information
Inatura
( www.inatura.at ; Jahngasse 9, Dornbirn; adult/child/family €10.50/5.30/23.10; 10am-6pm; ) Dornbirn's
biggest draw is this hands-on museum. It's a wonderland for kids who can pet (stuffed)
foxes and handle (real) spiders, whip up tornadose, conduct light experiments and gener-
ally interact with science, nature and technology. There's also a climbing wall and 3D
cinema.
MUSEUM
Altstadt
(Dornbirn) Dornbirn's compact old town centres on the Marktplatz¸ where your gaze is
drawn to the crooked, 17th-century Rotes Haus , which owes its intense red hue to an unap-
petising mix of ox blood and bile. Next door, the neoclassical columns and free-standing
Gothic belfry of Pfarrkirche St Martin catch your eye.
HISTORIC SITE
Rolls-Royce Museum
( www.rolls-royce-museum.at ; adult/child €9/4.50; 10am-6pm) Situated at the bottom of Rappenloch-
schlucht and ensconced in a 19th-century cotton mill, this museum harbours the world's
largest collection of Rolls- Royces. Highlights include a reconstruction of Royce's Cooke
St factory in Manchester and a hall of fame showcasing vintage Rollers that once be-
longed to the likes of Queen Elizabeth, Franco and George V. Stay for tea in the ever-so-
British rosewood tearoom.
MUSEUM
Jüdisches Museum Hohenems
( www.jm-hohenems.at ; Schweizer Strasse 5, Hohenems; adult/child €7/4; 10am-5pm Tue-Sun) Housed in the
Rosenthal villa, this museum zooms in on Hohenems' long-defunct Jewish community
with photos, documents and religious artefacts. The Rosenthals built up a considerable
textile business in the town, and part of their wealth - especially gorgeous period fur-
niture - is also on show.
Huddled against a tree-lined hill just outside the town on the road to Götzis is the Jewish
cemetery ; get the key from the museum.
MUSEUM
Rappenlochschlucht
(Rappenloch Gorge; www.rappenlochschlucht.at ) Just 4km south of Dornbirn is the narrow Rappen-
lochschlucht, gouged out by the thundering Dornbirner Ache. A 10-minute walk leads up
to a good viewpoint and a 30-minute trail to the Staufensee , a turquoise lake ringed by
forest.
