Winter Activities
St Anton is the zenith of Austria's alpine skiing, and the spacey Galzigbahn gondola,
launched in 2007, has further improved conditions. The terrain is vast, covering 280km
of slopes, and the skiing challenging, with fantastic backcountry opportunities and exhil-
arating descents including the Kandahar MAP GOOGLE MAP run on Galzig.
Cable cars ascend to Valluga (2811m), from where experts can go off-piste all the way
to Lech (with a ski guide only). For fledglings, there are nursery slopes on Gampen
(1850m) and Kapall (2330m). Rendl is snowboarding territory with jumps, rails and a half-
pipe. A 10-minute stroll east of St Anton is Nasserein , where novices can test out the nurs-
ery slopes. Further east still are the quieter slopes of St Jakob , easily accessed by the
Nasserein gondola.
A single ski pass (1-/3-/6-day pass €48/134/235) covers the whole Arlberg region and is valid
for all 84 ski lifts.
Summer Activities
Walking in the mountains is the most popular summertime activity, and the meadows full
of wildflowers and grazing cattle are pure Heidi. A handful of cable cars and lifts (€5 to
€23 one way, €6 to €25 return) rise to the major peaks. If you're planning on going hik-
ing, pick up a detailed booklet and map from the tourist office. Also consider purchasing
a Wanderpass (3-/7-day pass €32/37) , providing unlimited access to all lifts, or a St Anton Card (3-/
7-day pass €47/54) , which offers the same benefits plus entrance to the town's indoor and out-
door swimming pools.
