Information
The ultramodern tourist office ( 67 60; www.mayrhofen.at ; Dursterstrasse 225; 9am-6pm Mon-Fri,
2-6pm Sat, 9am-1pm Sun) stocks loads of information and maps on the resort. Look for the
comprehensive Info von A-Z ; it's free and written in English. There is a handy topograph-
ic model of the surrounding Alps, a 24-hour accommodation board and free wi-fi.
Getting There & Away
By the normal train that runs twice hourly, it's €7.10 each way to Jenbach (52 minutes).
For the Zillertal Circuit, buses run between Mayrhofen and the Schlegeisspeicher reser-
voir (one way €6.10, one hour, seven daily).
Ginzling

For a taste of what the Austrian Alps looked like before the dawn of tourism, head to
Ginzling, an adorable little village 8km south of Mayrhofen.
The main draw for hikers is the Naturpark Zillertaler Alpen ( www.naturpark-zillertal.at ) , a 379-sq-
km nature park and pristine alpine wilderness of deep valleys and glaciated peaks. The
Naturparkhaus Zillertaler Alpen ( 521 81; www.ginzling.at ; 8am-noon & 1-5pm May-Oct) is the park's
information centre and runs 200 excellent themed guided hikes , most costing between €5
and €7, from May to October. The extensive program includes everything from llama
trekking to sunrise photo excursions, herb walks and alpine hikes. Be sure to reserve your
place by 5pm on the day before your planned hike.
The most charming place to stay is Gasthof Alt-Ginzling ( 202 96; www.ferienwohnungen-ginz-
ling.at ; 240 Ginzling; s/d €47/82, apt €90-120, mains €7-16; ) , once a wayside inn for smugglers trav-
elling to Italy. The 18th-century farmhouse oozes history from every creaking beam and
the low-ceilinged, pine-panelled rooms are supremely cosy. The restaurant serves local
rainbow trout.
In winter free ski buses run frequently to Mayrhofen; otherwise there is an hourly ser-
vice (€2.70, 12 minutes). A road (toll €12) snakes on from Ginzling up the valley to the
Schlegeisspeicher reservoir, the trailhead for the stunning Zillertal Circuit ( Click here ).
