ROCK CLIMBING
CYCLING THE ZILLERTAL
The Zillertal is cycling nirvana, particularly for serious mountain bikers, many of whom limber up here before
taking part in the gruelling three-day Zillertal Bike Challenge ( Click here ) in July. The wide, sunny valley and
surrounding 3000m peaks are laced with 800km of well-marked routes that reach from easygoing two-hour
jaunts along the valley floor to panoramic mountain passes, such as the notoriously tough 56km trail from Fügen
to Kellerjoch, a test of stamina and condition.
You can access many of the high-altitude and downhill routes using the cable cars in the valley, and local
trains will transport your bike for free. Bikes are available for hire at major stations throughout the Zillertal, in-
cluding Zell am Ziller and Mayrhofen, for €8/12 per half-/full day. For free maps, detailed route descriptions and
downloadable GPS bike tours, visit www.zillertal.at or www.best-of-zillertal.at .
Sleeping
The tourist office can help you trawl through the mountain of sleeping options in the vil-
lage; rates are roughly 30% higher in winter. Bear in mind that many hotels and restaur-
ants close between seasons.
Stoanerhof
( 627 98; www.stoanerhof.at ; Dorf Haus 764; s €49, d €58-70; ) Serenely located in meadows
yet just a joyous hop from the Ahorn and Penken lifts, Stoanerhof is a bargain. Expect a
genuinely warm welcome, cosy rooms done out in pine and big mountain views from the
GUESTHOUSE
