WORTH A TRIP
OLYMPIC BOBSLED
For a minute in the life of an Olympic bobsleigh racer, you can't beat the Olympiabobbahn ( 377 160;
www.olympiaworld.at ; Heiligwasserwiese, Igls; summer/winter €28/30; Dec-Mar & Jul-Aug), built for the
1976 Winter Olympics. Zipping around 10 curves and picking up speeds of up to 100km/h, the bob run is 800m
of pure hair- raising action. You can join a professional bobsled driver in winter or summer; call ahead for the
exact times. To reach it, take bus J from the Landesmuseum to Igls Olympiaexpress.
Winter Activities
Innsbruck is the gateway to a formidable ski arena, the Olympia SkiWorld Innsbruck , covering
nine surrounding resorts and 300km of slopes to test all abilities. The most central place
to pound powder is the Nordpark ( cable cars every 15min 8am-7pm) . At the top, boarders can
pick up speed on the quarter-pipe, kickers and boxes at Nitro Skylinepark ( www.skylinepark.at ) ,
while daring skiers ride the Hafelekar-Rinne, one of Europe's steepest runs with a 70%
gradient. The OlympiaWorld Ski Pass (3-/6-day pass €117/197) covers all areas; ski buses are free to
anyone with an Innsbruck Card ( Click here ) .
Nonskiers can find their snowy fun on cross-country trails, toboggan runs, ice rinks
and winter walking trails.
Tours
Innsbruck Information ( Click here ) organises guided city walks , which meander through
the historical centre. One-hour tours leave at 2pm daily (plus 11am in July and August)
and cost €8. If you would rather go it alone, pick up an iTour guide (€7.50), which takes
you on a two-hour, 23-stage walk through town.
To capture more than the Altstadt in a tour, jump on a bright-red Sightseer bus
( www.sightseer.at ; adult/child day pass €6.50/4.70) , running between Messe/Zeughaus and Schloss
Ambras. Buses depart from Congress/Hofburg on Rennweg every 40 minutes roughly
between 10am and 5.30pm. Innsbruck Information sells tickets.
