ALBIN EGGER-LIENZ
Lienz' most famous son is artist Albin Egger-Lienz (1868-1926), who grew up here and then studied at the Fine
Arts Academy in Munich before becoming a member of the Vienna Secession in 1909. After a brief spell teach-
ing art in Weimer, Egger-Lienz spent much of WWI capturing wartime horrors and the pervading spirit of hope-
lessness on canvas. Ghostlike corpses on battlefields and soldiers walking hand in hand with skeletons are
among the deeply moving motifs that won the artist international acclaim (and criticism). The Tyrolean struggle
for liberation (1809), the hardship and anguish of rural life and destiny are other recurring themes in his sombre,
