A network of well- signposted mountain-bike trails radiates from Li-
enz, taking in the striking landscape of the Dolomites. The scenic 366km Drau Radweg

and larch woods as its mesmerising backdrop, this cosy alpine hut is like something out of a fairy tale. In sum-
mer, walkers and cyclists make the 12km jaunt south of Lienz for the enticing views from the terrace and the
home cooking, which includes the likes of
Kaspressknödel
(fried cheese dumpling) and
Schlipfkrapfen
(Tyrolean-style ravioli). Snowy winter days up here are equally enchanting - bring your sled and you'll be able
to race back down to Lienz on a scenic toboggan track.
Festivals & Events
sponsored iron-man competition billed as the world's toughest team challenge. Headlin-
ing the program is the cross-country relay race, where teams of runners, paragliders,
kayakers and mountain bikers battle it out for the title. Lively open-air concerts and
parties complement the line-up.
In late July, a free street festival draws top circus and theatre acts from around the
world. Summer also welcomes a series of events celebrating Tyrolean culture, plus free
concerts on Hauptplatz and in other squares (8pm on Wednesdays and Sundays from
June to September).
