Situated about 50km west of Villach, Hermagor is popular as a base for skiing in the
nearby Nassfeld ski pistes, where you can zip around 110km of pistes (day pass €42) and
explore Nordic skiing trails and snowboarding runs; in summer it morphs into a low-key
spot for hikers and mountain bikers. Hermagor is also the starting point for hiking the
spectacular Garnitzenklamm , a narrow gorge some 2.5km west of town. Ask at the tourist
office for advice.
The Millennium-Express cable car (adult/child €16/8 return) climbs 6km up to Nassfeld (mountain
station: Madritsche), making it Austria's longest. The valley station is in Tröpolach, 8km
west of town along the B111 and then B90, or also reached by train.
Situated on a lovely rise about a 10-minute walk north of town along Radnigger
Strasse, Villa Blumegg ( 20 92; www.villa-blumegg.at ; Neupriessenegg 2; s €55, d €84-92, tr €109, apt
€168-243; ) has been recently renovated and offers comfortable rooms with and
without balconies. There are also holiday apartments here accommodating up to seven
people.
The tourist office ( 2043; www.hermagor.info ; Göseringlände 7; 8.30am-6pm Mon-Fri, 10am-2pm Sat &
Sun) is about 400m west of the train station on the B111. It has well-informed staff with
information on skiing, guided and unguided hiking, and mountain biking in the area. Fa-
cilities such as banks, supermarkets and a post office are all central or near the tourist of-
fice.
