With its well-kept, high-ceilinged rooms, this century-old manor has more
charm than your average hostel. Backpackers praise the facilities, which include a res-
taurant, TV lounge and barbecue area. Staff can arrange adventure sports such as rafting,
canyoning, paragliding, mountain biking and snowshoeing.

This hilltop hotel
impressed the likes of
Vanity Fair
with its retro-chic design and phenomenal mountain
backdrop. A terrace overlooking forested peaks, a thermal spa with pampering Aveda
treatments and yoga classes draw a style-conscious crowd. The studio-style rooms are all
about pared-down glamour, with bare-wood floors, cowskin rugs and flat-screen TVs
mounted on tripods.

The Shah
of Persia, Princess Margaret of Holland, Jude Law - they've all stayed at this mountain
retreat set in 30-hectare grounds. More of a hamlet than a hotel, the Grüner Baum's
cluster of alpine chalets shelter rooms beautifully furnished with antiques. A spa and
thermal pools, an outdoor activity program, delicious food and polished service justify
the hefty price tag. Kids love the resident alpacas.
