In-Depth Information
If you'd prefer to go it alone, a number of places along the promenade hire out pedalos/
motorboats for around €13/16 per hour from April to October.
DON'T MISS
FREE GUIDED HIKES
From mid-June to October, the tourist office arranges free guided walks on Schmittenhöhe and Kitzsteinhorn, in-
cluding glacier hikes, herb walks and five-hour treks to 2995m Maurerkogel. The staff can also advise you on
family-friendly llama treks in the Kaprun area, and have maps and GPS devices to help you plan your route.
Skiing
Together with neighbouring Kaprun, Zell am See has 138km of downhill skiing in its
mountainous backyard. The two must-ski biggies are Schmittenhöhe (1965m) and the Kitz-
steinhorn Glacier (3203m); the latter also offers cross-country skiing, year-round glacier ski-
ing on a variety of pistes, and an all-level snowpark with rails, kickers, tubes, boxes and a
160m superpipe for boarders. The terrain is more tree-lined and scenic than hair-raising,
but there are a couple of steep black pistes for experts. Expect fairly long lift queues in
the high winter season.
Ski passes for the Zell am See-Kaprun region cost €46/130/225 for one/three/six days.
Ski buses are free for ski-pass holders. The most convenient way to reach the slopes is by
taking the cityXpress gondola from central Zell am See. About 1.5km west of town, and
served by bus 71 from Postplatz in central Zell am See to the cable-car base station, the
Schmittenhöhebahn takes you even higher - to the summit of Schmittenhöhe.
Zeller See
The Zeller See may be on the cold side of refreshing, but the views are marvellous.
There's also loads of high-speed action on the water in summer, from waterskiing to
wakeboarding. If you'd rather not grit your teeth as you swim, try the Zell am See Lido MAP
GOOGLE MAP (€6.90/3.70; 9am-7pm) , or those in Thumersbach and Schüttdorf. They all fea-
ture sunbathing lawns, solar-heated pools and children's splash areas. Entry is free with
the Zell am See-Kaprun Card.
