Getting There & Away
Radstadt is on the route of a regular bus-train service running between Innsbruck (€34.40
to €50, 3¼ to four hours) and Graz (€38.60, three hours); the former involves at least one
change, in Bischofshofen, the latter a change at Stainach-Irdning. Zell am See (€15, 1½
hours) and Bruck an der Mur (€27.70, three hours) are on this route. From Radstadt, the
B99 climbs to the dramatic Radstädter Tauern Pass (1739m), then over to Carinthia. Just
to the west is the A10/E55, which avoids the high parts by going through a 6km tunnel.

Mauterndorf
06472 / POP 1720 / ELEV 1122M
Sleepy little Mauterndorf has fairy-tale appeal; its narrow streets are dotted with candy-
coloured houses and fountains. While the surrounding high moors and exposed bluffs are
set up for walking and skiing, its remote setting in the Lungau region keeps things quiet.
The village centrepiece is medieval Burg Mauterndorf (adult/child €8.50/5.50; 10am-6pm May-
Oct) . Dominating a rocky outcrop, this 13th-century castle was built by the prince-arch-
bishops of Salzburg on the site of a Roman fort. The castle now houses a regional mu-
seum and provides the backdrop for various cultural events. It is believed that in the
Middle Ages the main road passed directly through the castle courtyard and tolls were
extracted from road users.
Mauterndorf is on Hwy 99. Bus 780 runs from Radstadt to the Mauterndorf post office
(€8.20, 50 minutes, three times daily).
