Filzmoos

Theatrically set amid the jagged limestone spires of the Dachstein massif, rolling pastures
and the aptly named Bischofsmütze (Bishop's Mitre) peaks, Filzmoos is quite the alpine
idyll. Despite some wonderful hiking and skiing, the resort's out-of-the-way loca tion de-
ters the masses and the village has kept its rural charm and family-friendly atmosphere.
Activities
Overshadowed by the iconic Bischofsmütze (2454m), the village shares 32km of downhill
slopes with neighbouring Neuberg and is criss-crossed with 50km of serene winter walking
trails .
Queues are practically unheard of on Filzmoos' ski slopes, which mostly suit beginners.
The resort's nursery slopes, central ski schools and floodlit toboggan run appeal to famil-
ies. A day ski pass costs €37.50, and free ski buses shuttle between lifts. On a grander
scale, Filzmoos is part of the huge Ski Amadé ( Click here ) arena, which covers 860km of
varied terrain in five regions.
Hiking and rock climbing are Filzmoos' raisons d'être in summer. A network of well-
graded, colour-coded trails takes walkers to the glaciated peaks and bizarre limestone
formations of the Dachstein range. The two-day Gosaukamm circuit via Hofalm provides a
fantastic overview of the area, as does the eight-day Dachstein circuit . The tourist office has
trail maps and information on family hikes, such as the marmot-dotted Bachalm Trail, and
can arrange guided hikes.
Other popular activities include Nordic walking in the surrounding hills, and mountain
biking the challenging 182km Dachsteinrunde (Dachstein Tour) through Salzburgerland, Up-
per Austria and Styria. Pick up a map of the latter at the tourist office.
