Ebensee

Ebensee lies on the southern shore of the Traunsee. A cable car (return adult/child
€19.50/€9.70, hourly) runs up to
Feuerkogel
(1592m), where you find walking trails lead-
ing across a flattish plateau. Within an hour's walk,
Alberfeldkogel
(1708m) is a nature re-
serve popular for hiking and for cross-country skiing in winter, and has an excellent view
over the two Langbath lakes. Feuerkogel also provides access to winter
skiing
(day pass €33)
with easy to medium slopes.
In early January every year, the men of Ebensee don giant illuminated headdresses
made of tissue paper in a bizarre ritual known as the
Glöcklerlauf
. This heathen tradition is
intended to drive out evil spirits and to win the favour of benevolent ones. About 300
Glöckler
parade through the streets on the evening of 5 January wearing enormous
wedge-shaped hats.

Ebensee-Landungsplatz, rather than the larger Ebensee station, is the train station for
the centre and the boat landing stage.
