(toll per car €15) A scenic road climbs most of the way up Loser (1838m), the main peak over-
looking the Altausseer See. Snow chains are required in winter.
Activities
Bike trails lead off from Bad Aussee to all the major lakes, including the Hallstätter See,
and where there aren't trails the roads are generally suitable for riding. Zweirad Friedl (
52 918; www.badaussee.net/zweirad.friedl ; Meranplatz 38; mountain bikes per day €12) hires out mountain
bikes, and Sport Käfmüller ( 54 911; www.sport-kaefmueller.at ; Ischler Strasse 121; per day mountain bikes
€15, e-bikes €18) does the same, as well as offering e-bikes.
Grundlsee
Five kilometres northeast of Bad Aussee, Grundlsee has a good lookout at its western end
as well as water sports (including a sailing school) and walking trails. Extending from the
eastern tip of the lake are two smaller lakes, Toplitzsee and Kammersee . Between May and
October, three-hour boat tours ( 86 13; www.3-seen-tour.at ; adult/child €23/12) take you through all
three. Bus 956 departs almost hourly from the post office to Grundlsee Seeklause week-
days, every two hours weekends (€2, 10 minutes).
WATER SPORTS
Koppentalweg
The Koppentalweg is a picturesque 10km hiking and cycling trail that runs west through
the lush Traun River valley; it connects via the Koppenbrüllerhöhlen (caves) with the
Ostuferwanderweg running along the Hallstätter See. The trail begins at the train station.

HI Jugendgästehaus

hostel has a wellness area with sauna and fitness facilities, as well as a playground for
kids and a terrace for soaking up the mountain sunshine. HI Jugendgästehaus is located
15 minutes' walk from the post office by road, or by quicker (unlit) footpaths.
