At least nine daily buses connect Hallstatt (Lahn) town with the cable car at Obertraun-
Dachsteinseilbahn (€2.20, from nine to 16 minutes).
CAR
Access into the village is restricted: electronic gates are activated during the day. Staying
overnight in the centre gives you a parking rate of €9 per 24 hours in the P1 parking zone
(follow the signs, press 'Hotel Ticket' when entering and contact the attendant); you also
get use of the special shuttle bus. See

more. The rate otherwise is €12 per 24 hours.
TRAIN
Trains connect Hallstatt and Bad Ischl (€3.80, 25 minutes, hourly), and Hallstatt every
two hours with Bad Aussee (€3.80, 15 minutes). Hallstatt train station is across the lake
from the village, and boat services coincide with train arrivals (€2.40, 10 minutes, last
ferry to Hallstatt Markt 6.50pm).

More low-key than Hallstatt, this broad settlement offers great access to the Dachstein
caves. It's also a good starting point for hikes around the lake, or more strenuous treks up
to the caves themselves and beyond through alpine meadows. Signs from the train station
point the way to the cable-car station and ice caves. The trail (No 16) to the caves is a
stiff 2½-hour hike from the valley station.

Climb to the Dachstein caves and
you'll find yourself in a strange world of ice and subterranean hollows extending 80km
in some places. The two caves, the
Dachstein Eishöhle

, take about 15 minutes to reach by foot in different directions
from the Schönbergalm cable-car station at 1350m. Tours of each cave last an hour.
