Schärding
07712 / POP 4880
Schärding is an easy-going town on the Inn River, with peaceful riverfront walks and a
baroque centre studded with merchants' houses in myriad pastel shades, such as the
identically gabled ones that line up along the Silberzeile (Silver Row).
Standing head and shoulders above most places in town is antique-meets-modern Hotel
Forstinger ( 23 02-0; www.hotelforstinger.at ; Unterer Stadtplatz 3; s/d/apt €78/128/174; ) ¸
whose tastefully appointed rooms combine a contemporary aesthetic with period features.
A fine pick for a bite to eat is slick bistro Seven ( 361 35; www.seven.or.at ; Silberzeile 7; light meals
& mains €7-18; 10am-midnight Wed-Mon) , with a people-watching terrace on the Silberzeile.
The tourist office ( 43 00-0; www.schaerding.at ; Innbruckstrasse 29; 9am-6pm Mon-Fri, 11am-3pm Sat
& Sun, closed weekends Oct-Mar) , near the bridge spanning the river into Germany, can assist
with booking accommodation.
If you have your own transport, the approach to Schärding from Linz, via Engel-
hartszell along the Danube, is beautiful and certainly off the beaten track. A more leis-
urely alternative is a boat trip ( www.innschifffahrt.at ; Kaiserweg 1; adult/child €12/6; Tue-Sun Apr-Oct)
between Passau (Ingling) and Schärding. Trains connect Linz with Schärding (€19.10,
1¼ hours) roughly every hour.
