Freistadt Brauhaus
( 727 72; www.freistaedter-bier.at ; Brauhausstrasse 2; 2-course lunch €6.90, mains €8-14; 9am-midnight) To
sample Freistadt's hoppy brews, head to the town's brewery restaurant, which has a

Getting There & Away
Freistadt is on a direct rail route from Linz (€11.80, one hour, every two hours). This line
then wriggles its way north to Prague; Czech rail fares are lower than those in Austria, so
you can save money by waiting and buying (in Czech currency) your onward tickets once
you've crossed the border.
The B310, which connects to the A7 motorway to Linz, runs adjacent to the walled
centre and then continues its way northwards towards Prague.

It's silent enough to hear a pin drop in the tiny village of Kefermarkt, home to the Pfar-
rkirche St Wolfgang (Oberer Markt 1; 7am-8pm) . The pilgrimage church's main claim to fame is
its Gothic Flügelaltar (winged altar). A masterpiece of craftsmanship, the limewood al-
tarpiece towers 13.5m, with latticework fronds rising towards the ceiling. At the centre
are three expressive figures, carved with great skill: St Peter, St Wolfgang and St Chris-
topher (left to right as you face them). The wings of the altar bear religious scenes in low
relief.
Perched on a hill overlooking the forest and Schloss Weinberg's red turrets is
microbrewery-cum-guesthouse Schlossbrauerei Weinberg (
71 11; www.schlossbrauerei.at ; Weinberg
) , 10 minutes' walk from Kefermarkt. Homebrews are paired with hearty fla-
