THE TRAUNVIERTEL
The pleasantly green and rolling Traunviertel is a great place to abandon the map for a few
days. This stretch of Upper Austria is less about sightseeing and more about easing into
country life - whether hiking in the hills, sampling homemade Most in the apple orchards
or bedding down in a rambling Vierkanthof farmhouse.

Steyr
07252 / POP 38,200
Franz Schubert called Steyr 'inconceivably lovely' and was inspired to pen the sprightly
Trout Quintet here. And lovely it is: on the confluence of the swiftly flowing Enns and
Steyr Rivers, the postcard-like old town of cobbled lanes and candy-hued baroque houses
is one of Upper Austria's most attractive. Every April, the town pays homage to the com-
poser at the Schubert Festival.
Sights
Great for an aimless amble, Steyr's well- preserved old town centres on the Stadtplatz and
its clutch of graceful Gothic, Renaissance and baroque houses.
Museum Arbeitswelt
( www.museum-steyr.at ; Wehrgrabengasse 7; adult/child/family €5/3.50/9; 9am-5pm Tue-Sun Mar-Jul & Sep-Dec)
Housed in a converted factory by the river, this excellent museum delves into Steyr's in-
dustrial past with exhibits on working-class history, forced labour during WWII and the
rise of the Socialist party.
MUSEUM
Stadtmuseum
(Grünmarkt 26; 10am-4pm Tue-Sun) Set in an early-17th-century granary with an eye-
catching sgraffito mural facade, this museum spells out Steyr's culture and folklore in
artefacts. The baroque and Biedermeier nativity figurines are the highlight of the perman-
ent collection.
