Join
the cake-loving locals at this celebrated cafe. You'd need a huge fork (and appetite) to
tackle the
Linzer Torte
that set a Guinness World Record in 1999, measuring 4m high and
weighing 650kg. Bake your own (perhaps not quite as big) at one of the regular cookery
workshops.

Linz spreads out
picturesquely before you from this gastro duo, a short taxi ride from town. At ultra-chic
Verdi, Erich Lukas prepares seasonal dishes with panache and precision, such as quail
breast with herby risotto and plump free-range chicken with truffle gnocchi. Wood-
beamed Einkehr, in the same building, is an altogether cosier affair and serves Austrian
comfort food. They're 5km north of the city centre.
