REED EXPLORATIONS
Although Purbach isn't located directly on the lake shore, it's inside a nature reserve and has reed banks that in-
vite exploration on a bicycle ride or an easy walk. Kirchengasse/Gartengasse one block north of the tourist office
leads down to the reeds, and from there a 2.5km path follows a canal out to the lake. An alternative ride or walk
is to follow the Kirschblutenradweg (B12) north along the reeds to Breitenbrunn (about 4.5km), turn right onto
the Schilflehrpfad (Reed Educational Path) and follow that out to the lake (about 3km), where there's lake swim-
ming. Hire bikes from the camping ground or ask at the tourist office. Canoe Excursions (

) takes you out into the reeds and is also suitable for
kids. Book at least one day ahead.
Getting There & Away
Purbach has direct train connections with Neusiedl am See (€3.70, 12 minutes, hourly),
Eisenstadt (€3.80, 15 minutes, hourly) and Vienna Hauptbahnhof (€13.50, one hour,
hourly), and direct bus connections with Eisenstadt (€3.80, 20 minutes, at least one every
two hours). From Rust, get off in Schützen am Gebirge (centre) and walk 300m to the
train station to change to a regional train.

Neusiedl am See is the region's largest town, the most accessible from Vienna, and a
good springboard into the lake area.

11am-10pm) offers traditional Austrian edibles for reasonable prices as well as a few veget-
arian options.

8am-noon & 2-6pm Sat, 9am-noon Sun, closed from noon Fri-Sun Nov-Apr) has a map of the town and the
lake, as well as information on other lakeside towns.
