bizarre. The museum has retained the delightful marble features of the Biedermeier bath-
house from 1815, making it all the more worth a visit. Exhibitions change twice a year.
Kurpark
The Kurpark is a magnificent setting for a stroll or as a place to repose on the benches in
front of the bandstand , where free concerts are held from May to September. The tourist
office can tell you about these and others held in winter in the Haus der Kunst (prices and
exhibitions vary); an operetta festival takes place from June to September. Attractive flower
beds complement monuments to famous artists (Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss, Grillparzer
etc). Near the southern entrance to the park, the Undine-Brunnen (fountain) is a fine amal-
gam of human and fish images.

MUSEUM
Rollett Museum
(Weikersdorfer Platz 1; adult/child €3.50/2; 3-6pm Wed-Mon) The Rollett Museum, southwest of the
town centre and just off Weilburgstrasse (a five-minute walk southeast of the Thermal-
strandbad), covers important aspects of the town's history. The most unusual exhibit is
the collection of skulls, busts and death masks amassed by the founder of phrenology,
Josef Gall (1752-1828), who sparked the craze of inferring criminal characteristics from
the shape of one's cranium. Keep your hat on.
MONUMENT
Dreifaltigkeitssäule
This monument on Hauptplatz to the Holy Trinity, dating from 1714, is one of Austria's
wierdest, the whole thing looking like icing dribbled over stacked meringue.
Mineral Spas & Springs
Baden's prime attraction is its 14 hot springs that emerge at a temperature of 36°C and
are enriched with sulphates. Its largest pool complex, the Thermalstrandbad ( Click here ) ,
is actually dedicated to good old-fashioned fun. The Römertherme ( 4 50 30;
www.roemertherme.at ; Brusattiplatz 4; 3hr/all-day €12.10/15.30;
SPA
10am-10pm) is all about health and re-
laxation. Admission weekdays is slightly cheaper.
CYCLING
Kronprinz-Rudolf-Weg
Though interesting, the museums won't knock you over if you have seen those in Vienna,
so cycling or hiking the 12-km long Kronprinz-Rudolf-Weg along the Schwechat River
to Mayerling is a good summer alternative. The tourist office has a free trail description
