In-Depth Information
In the eastern fringes of the Mostviertel, and only 23km south of St Pölten, is the Cister-
cian monastery ( www.stift-lilienfeld.at ; Klosterrotte 1; adult/child €3/1, incl tour €7/4; 8am-noon & 1-5pm, tours
10am & 2pm Mon-Sat, 2pm Sun) of Lilienfeld. Founded in 1202, the foundations of the monas-
tery are Romanesque, but have received Gothic and baroque makeovers over the centur-
ies.
Getting There & Away
From St Pölten frequent daily trains go to Waidhofen an der Ybbs (€17.20, one hour,
change at Amstetten). To Lilienfeld (€5.80, 40 minutes) the train service has been discon-
tinued and replaced by a twice-hourly bus service. You are better off using a car or bi-
cycle for Göstling, Lunz and for Gaming, which is 30km from Waidhofen.
DON'T MISS
LANDHAUSVIERTEL
The Landhausviertel (State Parliament Quarter) to the southeast of the historical core of St Pölten ( Click here ), is
a contemporary conflux of state buildings and cultural institutions strung out in a statement-making jumble of
glass and steel alongside the river. To get your bearings, first head to the Klangturm MAP GOOGLE MAP
(Landhausplatz; 8am-6pm Mon-Sat, 9am-5pm Sun) , from the top of which (reached by lift) there
are 360-degree views not just of the neighbourhood but of almost all of St Pölten. There's a small gallery at the
base of the tower and an information centre. A few steps from the tower stands the Landesmuseum MAP
GOOGLE MAP ( www.landesmuseum.net ; Franz-Schubert-Platz 5; adult/child €8/4; 9am-5pm Tue-Sun)
housing an engaging collection on the history, art and environment of the region. The new-millenium feel of the
quarter is reflected in the program of the nearby FestSpielHaus MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 90 80 80-222;
www.festspielhaus.at ; Kulturbezirk 2), which attracts an impressive list of musicians, orchestras, theatre com-
panies and dance ensembles from both Austria and beyond.
