Getting There & Around

Frequent daily trains connect Krems with Vienna's Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof (€14, one
hour). Wachau Linien ( 0810 222 324; www.vor.at ) runs buses along the Danube Valley as far as
Melk (hourly, one hour). The Wachau Ticket (€10) is available from the driver and gives
one day's unlimited travel on all buses (including Krems city buses) and the Danube fer-
ries.
Stift Göttweig
Brooding from its hilltop opposite Krems, Stift Göttweig (Göttweig Abbey; 02732-8558 1231;
www.stiftgoettweig.at ; Furth bei Göttweig; adult/child €7/3.50; 9am-6pm) was founded in 1083 and re-
stored after a devastating fire in the early 18th century. Aside from the grand view back
across the Danube Valley from its garden terrace and restaurant, the abbey's highlights
include the Imperial Staircase , with a heavenly ceiling fresco painted by Paul Troger in
1739, and the over-the-top baroque interior of the Stiftskirche (Abbey Church), with a
Kremser Schmidt work in the crypt. Guided tours at 11am and 3pm take in the abbey's Im-
perial Wing (per person €2); the church can be viewed without a tour.
The best way to reach Göttweig is by train from Krems, though it's a steep walk uphill
from the Klein Wien station (€2.20, 10 minutes, every two hours).
Schloss Grafenegg
About 10km east of Krems near the road to Tulln stands Schloss Grafenegg ( www.grafenegg.com ;
Grafenegg 10; adult/child €5/3; 10am-5pm Tue-Sat, mid-Apr-Oct) , a castle with the look and feel of
an ornate Tudor mansion set in English woods. Built in a revivalist (neo-Gothic) style by
Leopold Ernst in the mid-19th century, it is now a venue for exhibitions and concerts but
you can explore the interior, which includes a chapel and decadent state rooms. The
