WALKING KREMS
A walk through the cobblestone streets of Krems and Stein, especially at night, is one of the delights of a visit.
Some of the most atmospheric parts to explore are on and behind Schürerplatz MAP GOOGLE MAP and
Rathausplatz MAP GOOGLE MAP in Stein (don't miss these two wonderful squares), dominated by the
baroque Mazzettihaus and the 18th-century Steiner Rathaus respectively; here you could be forgiven for think-
ing you had stumbled upon an isolated Adriatic village.
Sleeping
Krems has plenty of places to kip but booking ahead is advised in summer. Stein has a
good selection of private rooms and small guesthouses.

( 823 16; www.gaestehaus-einzinger.at ; Steiner Landstrasse 82; s €38, d €58-70; ) The courtyard in this
16th-century guesthouse will blow away even the most history-hardened: blackbirds buzz
and chirp, budgies taunt them from a cage, and one portico after another opens up around
a courtyard spilling with foliage. The five singles and seven doubles are a little basic but
some have views to night-lit Stift Göttweig.

are a great deal if you don't mind the slog up to the university. Some of the basic but
comfortable rooms are huge and have bathrooms the size of some hotel singles, plus their
own kitchens. Breakfast is included but don't get caught out by the early check-out time
(10am). Outside of reception hours keys are left in a 'DigiSafe' outside if you've booked
ahead - the code is emailed to you beforehand.
