Dr-Karl-Renner-Ring) Volksgarten Pavillon is a lovely 1950s-style pavilion with views of
Heldenplatz. During the day and very early evening it's a cafe and restaurant, but its
highlight is the legendary Tuesday night Techno Cafe, when its ever-popular garden is
packed to the gunnels. Entrance some nights is free; for the Techno Cafe it's around €4.

Freud, Mahler and Marlene Dietrich all had a soft spot for this coffee house, which
opened its doors in 1873. Today, it attracts both politicians and theatre -goers with its el-
egant interior and close proximity to the Burgtheater, Rathaus and Parlament. The dessert
menu features Sacher Torte, and there's free live piano music from 8pm to 11pm Sunday
to Tuesday.

lounge on the 18th floor of the Sofitel you can pick out landmarks such as the Stephans-
dom and the Hofburg over a pomegranate martini or mojito. By night, the backlit ceiling
swirls with an Impressionist painter's palette of colours.

(Praterstern can be rough around the edges at times) and looking for all the world like a
prefab schoolroom, Fluc is where black-clad students, alcoholics and the occasional TV
celebrity all share the stripped-back venue without any hassle; DJs or live acts play every
night (electronica features heavily).
