The fragrance of tea from around the world greets customers on entry to Haas & Hass,
Vienna's prime tearoom (coffee is also served). Green, herbal, aromatic, Assam, Ceylon,
Darjeeling - the selection seems endless. The rear garden is a shaded retreat from the
wind, rain, sun and tourist bustle, while the front parlour sports comfy cushioned booths
and views of Stephansdom.

COFFEE HOUSE
( 512 38 93; 01, Stallburggasse 2; 8am-9pm Mon-Fri, to 7pm Sat, 10am-7pm Sun; Herengasse, Stephans-
platz) Little has changed in Bräunerhof from the days when Austria's seminal writer Tho-
mas Bernhard frequented the premises: staff can be stand-offish, the mood is somewhat
stuffy and the newspaper selection good. For all this, it's a coffee house with traditional
Viennese flavour. Classical music features from 3pm to 6pm on weekends.

Café Leopold Hawelka

( www.hawelka.at ; 01, Dorotheergasse 6; 8am-1am Mon-Sat, 10am-1am Sun; Stephansplatz) This classic
coffee house has a relaxed and convivial vibe with orange wallpaper and decorative
tones. Nothing much has changed at Hawelka since it opened in the late 1930s. Friedens-
reich Hundertwasser, Elias Canetti, Arthur Miller and Andy Warhol, just to name a few,
are among the artists and writers who have hung out here.
Café Sacher

(01, Philharmonikerstrasse 4; 8am-midnight; Karlsplatz, D, 1, 2, 71 Kärntner Ring/Oper) Sacher is
the cafe every second tourist wants to visit. Why? Because of the celebrated Sacher Torte
(€4) , a rich chocolate cake with apricot jam once favoured by Emperor Franz Josef. Truth
be told, as cafes go Sacher doesn't rate highly for authenticity, but it pleases the masses
with its opulent furnishings, battalion of waiters and air of nobility.
