NASCHING AT THE NASCHMARKT
The Naschmarkt MAP GOOGLE MAP (06, Linke & Rechte Wienzeile; 6am-7.30pm Mon-Fri, to 6pm Sat;
Karlsplatz, Kettenbrückengasse) - to nasch means to 'snack' in German - is Vienna's biggest and boldest
market and a food lover's dream come true. Not only are there food stalls selling meats, fruits, vegetables, cheeses
and spices, but there's also a wide variety of restaurants. Here're a couple:
Neni MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 585 20 20; www.neni.at ; 06, Naschmarkt 510; breakfasts €5-9, salads & snacks
€4.50-10.50, mains €10.50-15; 8am-midnight Mon-Sat; ; Kettenbrückengasse) This industro-cool
glass cube combines a cafe, bar, and restaurant where food has mostly a Middle Eastern focus. Dishes such as car-
amelised aubergine with ginger and chilli are served alongside tuna steaks in a seasame-pepper crust with wasabi
mash. Tables fill up fast most nights, so reserve ahead or drop by outside prime time. Breakast is served until
2pm.
Naschmarkt Deli MAP GOOGLE MAP ( www.naschmarkt-deli.at ; 04, Naschmarkt 421; snacks €4-9, breakfast
€7-9, mains €8-13.50; 8am-midnight Mon-Sat; Kettenbrückengasse) Among the enticing stands along the
Vienna River, Naschmarkt Deli has an edge on the others for its delicious snacks. Sandwiches, felafel, big
baguettes and chunky lentil soups fill the menu, but much space is dedicated to a heady array of breakfasts. Come
Saturday morning this glass box overflows with punters waiting in anticipation for the Turkish or English break-
fast.
Drinking & Nightlife
Vienna is riddled with late-night drinking dens, but you will find concentrations of pulsat-
ing bars north and south of the Naschmarkt, around Spittelberg (many of these double as
restaurants) and along the Gürtel (mainly around the U6 stops of Josefstädter Strasse and
Nussdorfer Strasse). The Bermuda Dreieck (Bermuda Triangle), near the Danube Canal in
the Innere Stadt, also has many bars, but they are more touristy.
Also during the summer months, party-goers congregate at Copa Kagrana and Sunken
City, an area around the U1 Donauinsel U-Bahn station. It's quite a tacky affair, but it can
be a lot of fun. Summer Stage ( 315 52 02; Rossauer Lände, 09; 5pm-1am Mon-Sat, 3pm-1am Sun May-
Sep; Schottenring, Rossauer Lände) and the Altes AKH MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 87 05 04; cnr Alser Strasse
& Spitalgasse; 5, 33, 43, 44 Lange Gasse) also wage war against the threat of melting indoors.
Vienna's coffee houses are wonderful places for sipping tea or coffee, imbibing beer or
wine, and catching up on gossip or news of the world. Most serve light meals, while most
cafes have a good cake range.
